Saúl Aguirre

  • We are all humans of different cultural backgrounds, with many particular habits. We should not be portrayed by stereotypes, cast, or pinned to any specific social prejudice. I will not deny my Mexican upbringing (heritage), and it will not limit me in any way. Such imaginary walls, I feel only divide us and place barriers. My work reflects the environment we all share, yet sometimes my Latino background draws a focus towards social awareness, which most times sits quietly in the background of our conscience. My work is based on collaboration with society. It creates a reaction from those that observe, reminding them of the injustices in our communities, cities, states, countries, and sometimes the world. The responsibility as an artist is to reflect all that surrounds us and make us aware by bringing out our most hidden images from within our subconscious.
  • Art has always been a medium through which society reflects upon and expresses its understanding of human history. As an artist, it is our responsibility to delve into the depths of the past and present, to unravel the stories and complexities that have shaped our history, and to transform these narratives into visual representations.
Art also serves as a vessel for cultural memory. It preserves, interprets, and communicates historical events, traditions, and customs to future generations. Through art, we can breathe life into forgotten stories and revive the legacies of those who have been overlooked. By connecting the past to the present, art reminds us of the continuous thread that ties us to our ancestors and guides us into the future.
Furthermore, creating images that reflect an understanding of human history is an act of empathy and solidarity. It fosters a sense of connection and shared humanity, as we recognize the timeless struggles, triumphs, and aspirations that define us as a species. Through art, we bridge the gaps between generations, cultures, and continents, reminding us of our shared vulnerabilities and strengths.
As artists, it is our duty to be the storytellers, interpreters, and visionaries of human history. By creating images that reflect an understanding of our collective past, we contribute to a more holistic, empathetic, and introspective society. Art has the power to heal, challenge, and unite us, and through it, we can illuminate the depths of our humanity and create a better future.
